Lisa Vasquez's latest, THE UNFLESHED: TALE OF THE AUTOPSIC BRIDE . . . is the type of stomach churning tale that should come with a trigger warning. On paper it sounds like a throwback to classic Gothic fare in the vein of Mary Shelley's brand of spookery (and the story is evidently influenced by THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN), but Vasquez's also boasts a nasty, mean streak that makes you wonder if her imagination contains a sadistic torture chamber locked away somewhere. I mean that as a compliment, of course. The biggest strength of this story is the villain, who's so despicable and rotten that you just want to see him get his.
Lisa Vasquez has a really nasty streak in her, in terms of her writing. The previous book was centred around a wholesome girl. This one is centred around, as I said earlier, a character that I hated more than most I have ever read about. He is vile. He is evil personified. If he was standing beside the person you most hated in the world and you had a gun with two bullets and were allowed to shoot them both, you would put both bullets in Wulfe.
Lisa Vasquez proves with her novel "The Unfleshed: Tale of the Autopsic Bride" she is a writer of nightmarish vision and a new, poetic voice in today's horror genre. Her prose sings like a sonnet while driving the knife of dread ever further into her reader's imagination.
This was an excellent read. Very creepy, uncomfortable, and shocking, with strong characters and interesting twists and turns.
I think the highlight of this book, for me, is a well-crafted villain. Angus Wulfe was a man who made my skin crawl from the very beginning. I loved to hate the guy!
Lisa Vasquez offers that rare ability to delight and disgust in the most eloquent of manners. Love takes on many forms, and from the edge of a scalpel many delicate incisions and sutures form a landscape of maddening horror. Not since I read Mary Shelly’s Classic, FRANKENSTEIN, have I been so utterly obsessed with a tale.
Like many other popular writers, Lisa Vasquez presents us with a twisted alternate history tale. At least one would like to assume it is alternate history. If such a monstrous thing occurred, well, we would not have any way to know for certain if it did or didn’t and that is a bit terrifying. But it is definitely twisted.

By her "Darque Design," Lisa Vasquez creates vivid, twisted horror with the precision of a scalpel, and cuts into the reader's psyche with "fleshed out" characters. In her novel, THE UNFLESHED: TALE OF THE AUTOPSIC BRIDE, the main character, Angus Wulfe, gains notoriety for being as vile and twisted as the iconic Dr. Hannibal. Lisa's writing style has been compared to the works of Mary Shelley, Baz Luhrman, and the Grand Guignol (John Palisano, Bram Stoker-winning author of NERVES), and is being hailed as, "A writer of nightmarish vision and a new, poetic voice in today's horror genre" (Peter Molnar, author of THE CLOCKWORK LAZARUS).
Lisa is the CEO of Stitched Smile Publications, the owner of Darque Halo Designs, the Publisher's Liaison for the Horror Writers Association, and also volunteers as a mentor to other authors.
